This course delves into broader aspects of art production in sixteenth-century Antwerp, and draws on a range of art historical, methodological, and primary texts and sources. Bruegel and his artistic output will be examined as an access point between medias and modes of communication in the sixteenth century, and we will situate his work amidst a wide range of artistic media in the Netherlands including tapestry, sculpture, stained glass, book illustration, and architecture.
Attention will also be paid to Bruegel's prints, and the commercial industry of reproductive printmaking in Antwerp, facilitated by a class visit to the Art Gallery of Ontario to study Bruegel prints first-hand.
