The player, noted for his defensive role in the defunct Abiola Babes of Abeokuta, said he wished he had evidence of such act. I know very well that as much as these coaches are agents to some players so also the administrators. They cannot deny being agents to some of these players, because they also impose their players on these coaches. But my advice to the NFF is that any coach alleged to have either demanded or collected bribe from any player or football agent should be investigated and if proven banned to serve as deterrent to others.

His appointment got many of his contemporaries and followers of his football exploits overjoyed. Everyone who knows this gentleman and what he has achieved as a footballer is happy for him. He has paid his dues in Nigerian football. Many are optimistic he will deliver for Lagos state because it is a clear case of putting a square peg in a square hole.
Tajudeen Disu, who has spent the better part of the last two decades living and coaching in the United States, is retired from football and has done quite well, coming back home to help revive the dwindling fortunes of Nigerian football. Enjoy excerpts of the interview. So, share with us, how did the appointment come? I know the kind of love and passion I have for Nigerian football.
Nigerian football made me. I think I am one of the sportsmen that have served this country from grassroots to this level. So, regarding the appointment, Ademola Are who was the Head of Sports during the tenure of the immediate past Minister for Sports, Sunday Dare, played a significant role. I started from my youth, playing for my primary school, playing for the Surulere local government and eventually playing for Lagos State.
We won these two cups. Finbarrs College, Tarila Okorowanta from St. Finbarrs College and a lot of others were all part of the team. At the end of the day, when we returned, I was one of those selected for the Lagos State team to play in the national sports festival in Edo State. That was how I captained Lagos State. After playing at that tournament, about nine of us were picked from Lagos State, Coach Christopher Udemezue knew nobody then.
It is not like now that you need to have a god father to get into the national team. He was an ex footballer himself. Udemezue was a disciplinarian. He suspended the likes of late Stephen Keshi and Humphrey Edobor from the national team then. We were invited for screening and luckily, about seven or eight players from Lagos State then made the team.
He was an exceptionally good coach. It is unlike now that coaches take money to put players in the national team. And according to the statistics then, Abiola Babes had the best defenders because we conceded only five goals throughout the national league in Then, you could go away to any team and win, unlike now that the game is about the highest bidder.
Everything has been bastardised now. It is no longer about how talented you are, its about how much money you have. That is why when we select teams to go and represent us, thy get knocked out in the group stages because the very best were not selected. Yes, we thank God today that we have a new Lagos State FA board under the Chairmanship of Fuad Oki, a man whose leadership I respect so much because of the passsion and sincerity he puts into everything that he does.
He has shown that he is capable of bringing back the lost football glory of the state. I know many people may not like me for saying this but I thank God that I do not have to wait for their money to feed. He gave me the opportunity to go to America and study. He gave me a four year scholarship. I now have a citizenship of America. Once I no longer find the situation conducive, I buy my ticket and return to America.
So, I have nothing to fear. I say the truth always. It is because of my passion for the game of football that I am where I am now and part of the Lagos State Football Association and also because I want to give back. It is not about the money. As we speak, I have not collected one dime from the association. I have been the Technical Director going to about four months now and we have not been paid any salary for three months yet I am doing the work with pride and with joy because I am happy giving back.
My first assignment or tournament was a really good one. Playing against each other was fun then. Back then, there was a process. You would first graduate from grass root football from there to the Academicals, then from Academicals to the senior national team. But suddenly everything just went down the drain. And I know what he did for the youths at that time.
He would send home jerseys, balls, just to encourage the youth. He was really loved because despite the fact that he was in UK, he was still thinking of the youths back home in Surulere and Lagos state as a whole. And I also remember the first time he told me he had made up his mind to come home to join politics, I was like, is he serious and he said yes, he was serious.
But as his old friend, I knew what was motivating him then to come back. So, this was the reason why he felt he needed to be part of government. And like a joke, he became the chairman of Surulere local government and of course I knew he was going to give it his best shot. That prompted me too to come back home because I knew that working with him would enable me to also contribute my quota to the development of football within the state.
Ajide ensured I got the job. He drove me in his car to Abeokuta and with his help, God made it possible for me to get the job. There were already nine people shortlisted for the job, but I was deemed most qualified for the job. I was there for just one season and by the special grace of God, the team got promoted to the premiership under my watch.
After that, I returned to the US because I was no longer comfortable with the way the club was handling the financial aspect of things and this was affecting the players. When I returned, he made me the Director of Sports for the local government. And I am grateful for the fact that he gave me the full control over what I do. There is no interference, no pressure from anywhere, I just do my job.
We won nine trophies out of ten in two years. The only trophy we lost was that of the Lagos state sports festival which we lost in the finals via penalty shootout. Fashola was the governor at the time, the match was played at the Teslim Balogun stadium. After that, he left the council and I had to go back to the US again. By the grace of God, he became the chairman again and I returned.
What explains the strong bond between both of you? At this level, I believe that this is the only person I can work with, he knows who I am. He trusts me and he knows what I am capable of. Everything that we have done together as far as the round leather game is concerned has been a positive one. He and I are both passionate about the youths, we strive to do all we can to ensure that they lead a productive life.
There are a couple of kids in the UK now who got scholarships through him. Through him, they are living their dreams. He made sure he gave as much youths as he could the opportunity to secure a brighter future. That is one of the reasons I came back to work with him and I have never regretted doing so. He has done so much for the youths and for sports in general.
If he is in charge of NFF today, or in charge of the sports ministry, trust me, our football will be revived. Even our local government has turned to Nigeria Football Federation office. This is because he has done so much for the players and believe me, if I begin to talk about that we will be here till tomorrow. This divide and rule system that the NFF has been using to cause disunity within us will finally come to an end now.
I have been with the players for over 15 years so I know what is happening.
