I am taking our culture to other countries. I hope your readers are interested in listening to my album, that they enjoy it. I hope I can bring my music to our country, which is the dream I have always had since I left the Dominican Republic. Over the past 40 years, this Grammy Award-winning artist has excelled as a trumpeter, pianist, composer, arranger, bandleader, musical director, radio show host, educator, and jazz enthusiast and is deeply involved in every aspect of Puerto Rican music.
Danilo Navas [LJN]: 40 years of musical career. But it means a lot of work, dedication, effort… Tell me about your beginnings, your formative years. I would like to see a second volume of that project. HR: Yes, we talked about it… well, look, San Juan when I was growing up was a typical, normal, Caribbean town at that time. Today, San Juan is more commercialized and more touristy.
It has always been touristy, but at that time it was less so. At home, what we breathed and heard was music that my father played on his saxophone. In fact, he always had a job with the United States Postal Service, for more than 30 years, but there was a time, maybe a period of 12 years, when he worked a lot in music, playing the saxophone.
He played the baritone saxophone on four of his very important records, in the early 70s. I lived through all of that. My father would go to New York to record, then he would return to Puerto Rico and go on tour with Bobby. The band would rehearse in the garage of the house, my dad had a Volkswagen Beetle and I would stay watching and listening to the orchestra rehearse.
This was before I really started studying music, which happened in , in January I was well connected on both sides, and those were the sounds I grew up with. LJN: At what point did you realize you wanted to start a career in music, and what it meant to be a musician? HR: One day in I started my studies. I simply began to study music and things followed their course.
I was learning, surrounded by adults, because I constantly accompanied my father to rehearsals, and some gigs. He made me play in an orchestra he had at that time called Orquesta San Juan, when I was 14 years old, and for the first time in a professional way. There I learned that music was a business. I used to think that music was for fun, and one day my dad took me to play at a wedding, I remember it very well.
The following Monday, in the house where we lived on Calle Sol, in Old San Juan, he called me to a room that he called the studio, that was where he had his entire collection of records, books, he had the piano, all his saxophones. There he celebrated the rituals with his musician friends and they listened to music. That day when I came home from school he said to me, well, come here, take this, he gave me an envelope and I said, what is this?
There were 35 dollars. And, what is this I said? That is the money you earned for working because on Saturday you worked with me, you played at a wedding, he replied. It was super interesting. Those were three years that prepared me tremendously. The next step was to go to Berklee College of Music. Everything was supervised by my father, who was my mentor, and he told me that there was a private school in Boston, Massachusetts.
By then I was already making my own arrangements. My father had given me an orchestration book, and I started making a lot of arrangements when I was in grades 11 and HR: I like this album, I like it a lot, there is new music and in this album I wanted to make a combination, my roots are salsa, I always say that, and on the other hand I am fascinated by jazz and that is what I am always doing.
HR: Yes, of course. I realized over the years that I have been the arranger of many salsa hits, especially in the 90s, which is a time of great development for me as a musician. I produced his first 7 albums. And then I recorded my first album called Jazz Project , which I released in Ralph Mercado [Tropijazz] offered me my first record deal and I recorded my first 5 or 6 albums.
HR: Look, this is one of the most important concerts for me. Imagine, wow! It was a dream, I was young, there was a huge line of people waiting to get in, that was wonderful. Since then New York became my second home. I will play my most well-known songs, some from my album 40 th Anniversary , and I will bring Michelle Brava, she is a tremendous vocalist from Puerto Rico, who has collaborated with me for a long time.
In addition, we are going to interpret the best-known repertoire of my Latin Jazz compositions with the Mambo Legends Orchestra, and with some of the musicians from my big band. We are going to have a great celebration, for sure. There are many people who have known me since I was with Willie Rosario, so it will be a pleasure for me to meet them again and make music for them.

January was a pivotal moment in the history of this young, but already reknown pianist from Villa Clara province. On that date he started his band, Menduvia, a small group that would endeavor to create not only typical Latin jazz, but also jazz that includes riffs from styles that range from classic North American swing to Brazilian bossa nova.
It was with that band, in , that he cut his first independent record. September 1, Pianist Osmany Paredes ably represents a new breed of talented Latin American musicians whose music has a sophistication and sabor beyond its years. All the members of the band currently reside in Mexico City. He is active in the international scene and continues to perform at a variety of festivals throughout Latin America.
Osmany has expressed a burning desire to visit the United States and perform in the Big Apple New York in the near future. His recording rapidly ascended to the list of top 25 Latin Jazz recordings on a variety of radio stations abroad and in the United States. Osmany Paredes Gonzalez is a pianist, composer and arranger whose style blends jazz with his Afro-Cuban rhythmic heritage by using a technique derived from years of classical education.
Guillermo Paredes, percussionist with the Santa Clara Orquesta de Musica Moderna, was his first teacher and primary influence. Not only did his father teach him about jazz, son, danzon and boleros, he also taught him about his Afro-Cuban roots of rumba. He continued these studies at the esteemed National School of Music in Havana and graduated with honors in Throughout the time that he was studying the classics, he continued to listen to as many jazz recordings as possible in order to incorporate that style into his playing.
While still in school Osmany played with many groups in Cuba including the charanga group Orquesta America. This group provided him with his first tour outside of Cuba when they went to Venezuela. After graduation he joined the jazz group of Bobby Carcasses and later the charanga group Orquesta Enrique Jorrin. These three groups gave him an invaluable education in Cuban music, jazz, and performance.
He also appeared on a number Mexican television shows performing with his group Menduvia, Antonio Sanchez, the Art 01 big band, and Celio Gonzalez. January was the year that Osmany became musical director, composer and arranger of his group Menduvia. This cd has now been distributed in the United States and Puerto Rico. Create a free account.
